Keyboard Corner and Yamaha to the Rescue

For some years VJA had the use of an old 'leased' piano that needed extensive restoration as recommended by some of our jazz pianists currently performing at the Archive. Rather than having us outlay money for such an exercise, our Promotions Manager, Alan Clark, came up with the brilliant idea of obtaining 'sponsors' for the keys of the newly acquired Yamaha piano. This concept of financing was advertised to members through our quarterly VJAZZ Newsletter, and they were so intrigued that many of them wanted to be part of this unique opportunity. All 88 keys now have a sponsor, and someone even wanted a pedal. Names of members who 'sponsored' keys have been engraved on a replica piano keyboard to be permanently displayed above the piano in the R.D. Marginson Library. The piano was purchased from musical instrument supplier Keyboard Corner of Boronia, Victoria who also became VJA's first Corporate Sponsor, and the replica keyboard was donated by Yamaha Australia.
